Understanding You Before We Treat You
Importance of the assessmentWe believe the most effective care begins with understanding the complete picture—not simply treating symptoms. A comprehensive chiropractic assessment allows us to identify the underlying cause of your concerns, determine whether chiropractic care is appropriate for your condition, and develop a personalized plan that is safe, precise, and designed to help you achieve lasting results.
What To Expect Your First Visit
Your first visit is designed to give us a complete understanding of your health—not just your symptoms. As part of your comprehensive chiropractic assessment, we utilize five key components of analysis—visualization, instrumentation, static palpation, motion palpation, and X-ray analysis (when clinically indicated)—to accurately identify the cause of your condition and determine the safest, most effective path forward.
-
Every assessment begins with a detailed conversation about your health history, current symptoms, previous injuries, lifestyle, and health goals. Understanding your story provides important context and helps guide the rest of your examination.
-
The first component of our spinal analysis is visualization. We carefully observe your posture, gait, body mechanics, and overall movement patterns, looking for subtle changes that may indicate underlying spinal dysfunction or compensation
-
As part of your assessment, we use the Tytron Thermography Scanner, a non-invasive instrument that gently glides along the skin over your spine to measure subtle temperature differences. These temperature patterns can provide valuable information about how your nervous system is functioning, helping us identify areas of irritation or imbalance that may be associated with spinal dysfunction. The scan is completely painless, requires no radiation, and serves as an objective tool to complement the rest of your examination findings.
-
Through gentle hands-on examination, we assess the muscles and joints of your spine for tenderness, swelling, muscle tone, and tissue changes that may indicate spinal dysfunction.
-
Next, we evaluate how each spinal segment moves. By assessing joint motion and identifying areas of restricted mobility, we can determine where normal spinal function has been compromised.
-
When necessary, digital X-rays become the fifth component of our spinal analysis. They allow us to evaluate spinal structure, alignment, degeneration, and other conditions while ensuring your care is both safe and as precise as possible.
-
In addition to our system of analysis, we perform orthopedic and neurological testing to evaluate muscle strength, reflexes, sensation, joint function, and nerve involvement. These findings help us confirm your diagnosis and determine whether chiropractic care is appropriate for your condition.
-
Once your assessment is complete, we'll sit down with you to review everything we've discovered. We'll explain your findings in clear, easy-to-understand language, discuss what's causing your symptoms, answer your questions, and recommend a personalized plan designed to help you achieve lasting results.
Advanced Assessment Tools
Every patient is unique, which is why we use a combination of advanced technology, specialized training, and comprehensive examination procedures to ensure your assessment is as accurate and personalized as possible.
-
When clinically indicated, our on-site digital X-ray technology allows us to evaluate spinal alignment, joint health, and structural changes that cannot always be detected through a physical examination alone. This helps us deliver safe, specific, and individualized chiropractic care.
-
The Tytron Thermography Scanner measures subtle temperature patterns along the spine, providing objective information about nervous system activity. This painless, radiation-free assessment helps us identify areas that may require closer evaluation and supports our comprehensive spinal analysis.
-
As a Webster Technique Certified chiropractor, Dr. Rouskas performs specialized assessments for pregnant patients to evaluate pelvic balance and function. These evaluations help determine how spinal and pelvic mechanics may be influencing comfort, mobility, and overall well-being throughout pregnancy.
-
Children experience rapid growth and physical development, making proper spinal and nervous system function especially important. Our gentle, age-appropriate assessments are designed to evaluate posture, movement, spinal health, and developmental concerns in infants, children, and adolescents.

Case Study
Finding the Root Cause of Chronic MigrainesOne patient came to our office after suffering from chronic migraines for years. They had consulted multiple healthcare providers and specialists in search of answers, undergoing numerous evaluations but never receiving a clear explanation for why the migraines persisted. The only solution they had been offered was daily prescription medication, which provided minimal, if any, relief while the headaches continued to impact their work, sleep, family life, and overall quality of life.
Instead of immediately beginning treatment, we performed a comprehensive chiropractic assessment that included a detailed health history, spinal and nervous system analysis, orthopedic and neurological testing, and digital X-rays. The assessment revealed significant structural changes within the cervical spine that had not previously been addressed and were contributing to abnormal spinal mechanics and nervous system dysfunction.
Based on these findings, we developed a personalized care plan focused on correcting the underlying problem rather than simply managing symptoms. Throughout care, follow-up examinations and X-rays demonstrated measurable improvements in spinal alignment, accompanied by a dramatic reduction in the frequency and intensity of the patient's migraines. Today, they enjoy better sleep, improved daily function, and have significantly reduced their reliance on medication. While every patient's condition and results are unique, this case illustrates the importance of a thorough assessment in identifying the root cause of a health concern and creating a treatment plan tailored to the individual.
I will provide a picture showing the cervical spine x-ray at the start of care vs. at the end of care and the changes that are seen.
FAQs
-
No! You do not need a referral to schedule an appointment at Rouskas Family Chiropractic. You can contact our office directly to book your comprehensive chiropractic assessment.
-
Your first visit typically lasts approximately 30 minutes. This allows ample time to review your health history, perform a thorough examination, discuss your concerns, and complete any additional testing that may be clinically indicated.
-
Every patient is different. However, in most cases, we wait until your second visit to begin care. This gives us the opportunity to carefully review your health history, study all of your examination findings, and analyze any X-rays to ensure we have a complete understanding of your condition before making treatment recommendations. Our goal is to be thorough and make sure nothing is overlooked.
During your second visit, we'll conduct a comprehensive Report of Findings, where we'll explain exactly what we discovered, where the problem is occurring, and how it may be affecting your health. We'll walk you through what we recommend, why we recommend it, answer all of your questions, and—if appropriate—provide your first chiropractic adjustment. We believe you deserve to fully understand your condition and feel confident in your care before treatment begins.
-
No. Digital X-rays are not always required. If you have recent diagnostic-quality X-rays that are appropriate for your condition, are pregnant, or are a young child, additional imaging is often unnecessary. We only recommend X-rays when they are clinically indicated and when they will provide meaningful information to help guide your care.
When indicated, digital X-rays allow us to see the health and structure of your spine in a way that cannot always be determined through physical examination alone. They can reveal structural changes, alignment concerns, or underlying conditions that may not be apparent during orthopedic testing or spinal analysis. As Dr. Gonstead often said, "To see is to know; not to see is to guess." At Rouskas Family Chiropractic, we believe your health deserves more than guesswork. When X-rays are appropriate, they help us make informed decisions and provide care that is safe, specific, and tailored to your individual needs.
-
Yes. If you have previous X-rays, MRI scans, CT scans, or other diagnostic imaging related to your condition, we encourage you to bring them to your appointment. Reviewing prior imaging can provide valuable information and help us better understand your health history.
-
Insurance coverage varies depending on your individual plan and benefits. We work with most major insurance plans. We are in-network providers for Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield and Medicare Part B, and we are also credentialed out-of-network providers with UnitedHealthcare and Aetna, allowing many patients with those plans to utilize their out-of-network chiropractic benefits.
Before your first visit, our team is happy to verify your insurance benefits, explain your coverage, estimate any out-of-pocket costs, and answer your questions so you know exactly what to expect before beginning care.
