Prenatal Chiropractic Care & The Webster Technique

What is the Webster Technique?

The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment that reduces nervous system stress, balances pelvic bones, muscles & ligaments, and optimizes the mother's pelvic function in pregnancy and birth.

How Can Chiropractic Help?

Dystocia is defined as "difficult birth, typically caused by a large or awkwardly positioned fetus, by smallness of the maternal pelvis, or by failure of the uterus and cervix to contract and expand normally". The Williams Obstetrics textbook identifies power, passage, and passenger as 3 distinct causes of dystocia.

Power: Poor uterine contractility and maternal expulsive effort

  • As with all chiropractic adjustments, our intent is to improve the nervous system so the body can function better (power)

Passage: Abnormalities of the maternal bony pelvis - that is pelvic contraction

  • As with all sacral adjustments, pelvic balance is improved (passage). A balanced pelvis reduces undue tension in the attached muscles and ligaments.

Passenger: Abnormalities of presentation, position, or development of the fetus

  • In pregnant women, if the pelvis is not balanced, the uneven pulling on these muscles and ligaments may be restricting the baby's ability to get into the best possible position for birth (passenger)

What Are The Benefits?

  • Improved nervous system function
  • Balances pelvic bones, muscles and ligaments
  • In normalizing maternal physiology, it allows for a better pregnancy and birth
  • May include less low back pain, better movement, more comfort
  • May optimize baby's ability to get into the best possible position for birth
  • It's natural!
